Afterthoughts: Dancing Room Only - HONOLULU Magazine

I’m not talking about a symphony performance or a piano recital where you’re respectfully appreciating art. I mean rock, punk, pop, alternative and indie concerts, where all you wanna do is dance from the moment the band walks onstage. When I first started going to concerts at Pipeline Café in high school, I’d come home smelling like sweat and other people’s cigarettes—smoking was still legal in venues at the time—half deaf with ears ringing and a sore throat, covered in bruises, muscles aching, never happier. My friends and I would get our ritual Powerade from McDonald’s after, recounting our experiences on the way home and then trading burned CDs of our pictures and videos. For me, it was a monthslong experience, from the anticipation to the afterglow. I’ve been to more than 60 shows since and that feeling never gets old. After Pipeline closed and before The Republik opened, most shows I wanted to attend moved to the Waterfront at Aloha Tower. I was out of my element there. Sometimes the crowd was divided with a barrier, with those under 21 (me) relegated to one area farther from the stage. Once, security got mad at us for moshing and tried to stop us. At a New Found Glory show! What were we supposed to do, just stand there?I hate seeing these types of bands at the Blaisdell Concert Hall or Waikīkī Shell, where you can’t get close to the stage. The few times I did, those experiences weren’t memorable—because they weren’t really experiences. The artists were so far away they could’ve been anyone, and trying to dance in a 3-square-foot assigned space that’s at least 50 yards a...
CBJ Afterthoughts: Washington Capitalizes on Blue Jackets' Struggles - Sports Media Pass
Dec 10, 2018
The same problems that have plagued the Jackets all season were on full display during the first period: their inability to effectively transition to defense, lack of a net-front presence at both ends of the ice, and unwillingness to play with intensity and passion. The Washington Capitals’ first goal was the result of an odd-man rush and a nifty play by Brett Connolly. Defenseman Scott Harrington didn’t help the cause by sliding into the net along with the puck. The next goal was the result of a bad pass and good bounce, deflecting over Sergei Bobrovsky’s right shoulder from a skate. The dagger for the period came late and was an easy shot for an unattended Alexander Ovechkin. As if the defensive struggles weren’t enough to make the home crowd groan, the Jackets coupled it with a lack of offensive possession and attack. Registering only eight shots in the period, Columbus never really tested Holtby, except for one brief volley. Second PeriodThe second period began with the Jackets bringing a little more energy to the game. It ended with another abysmal power play (if you can even call it that at this point). Joonas Korpisalo took over between the pipes to start the second and proved his worth allowing no goals on eight shots. The Jackets failed to get on the score sheet, but Holtby was finally tested. Pierre-Luc Dubois had Columbus’s best scoring chance of the second period after collecting a rebound from Seth Jones, but Holtby quickly slid across the crease to hold Columbus scoreless through the second. Green Bay, Wis. (AP Photo/Mike Roemer)GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- Packers fans were able to see Joe Philbin in action as head coach for the first time Sunday.Although Philbin is the interim coach now, he did coach against the Packers once, four years ago in Miami. We caught up with some fans today to get their thoughts on his play-calling and leadership. They say they were happy to see the changes."He's doing good. Hes not as predictable. McCarthy was predictable it was run play after run play. And the falcons thought we were going to do run plays and it was pass play after pass play," said Packers fan Dan Divizio"He's running some different plays, he's switching it up a bit and it's nice to see some change of pace for the packers," said Nick Boisdorf.
